For the final week of my inquiry exploration, I decided to voice-record a summary. In it, I included terms and phrases that I have grown comfortable using independently. Additionally, I included other terms and phrases that, while familiar to me, still require some prompting and support from Jerin or a member of his family. This felt like a great way to gauge my progress and identify areas where I still need support.
In researching the range of time it can take to learn a new language from scratch, I found that “it can take anywhere between three months to two years to learn how to speak, write, and read in a new language fluently” (Study and Go Abroad, 2019). I think this quote is meaningful because it highlights how language learning can vary greatly for different people based on their practice, consistency, modes of learning, support from informed others, etc. Because I haven’t been practicing every day, I could see myself falling into the category of up to two years; however, if I committed to more regular practice, I’m sure I could speed up that process. I am genuinely enthusiastic about continuing this exploration of curiosity through learning Punjabi. As well, I look forward to deepening my understanding of Indian culture as a whole.
